Do you watch or record live TV on any channel?

This includes BBC, ITV, Sky, Channel 4, and any other channel on any device.

The BBC iPlayer catch

BBC iPlayer is the only on-demand service that requires a TV licence. ITV Hub, Channel 4, and My5 catch-up are all fine without one. Only live broadcasts on those platforms require a licence. If you use iPlayer at all, even once, even on your phone, you need a licence.

Common Questions

Do I need a TV licence for Netflix?
No. Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and all other streaming services (except BBC iPlayer) do not require a TV licence. You could have five streaming subscriptions and still not need a licence. The licence is only required for watching live TV broadcasts or using BBC iPlayer.
Do I need a licence for a second TV?
No. One licence covers all devices at your address, including TVs, laptops, phones, and tablets. It does not matter how many screens you have. The licence is per address, not per device.
What about students?
If you only watch on a device powered by its own battery (not plugged in to the mains), and your parents have a licence at their home address, you may be covered. Otherwise you need your own licence. This is a common grey area, and the rules depend on your tenancy type and viewing habits.
Can TV Licensing enter my home?
No. Enforcement officers (employed by Capita, not the BBC) have no automatic right of entry. They need a court-issued warrant, and a police officer must be present. You have no obligation to open the door, answer questions, or allow access to your property.
Can I cancel and get a refund?
Yes. Cancel online at tvlicensing.co.uk or call 0300 790 6165. You will receive a refund for any full months remaining on your licence. Refunds are processed within 21 days. After cancelling, you should declare that you no longer need one to stop enforcement letters.
Is the TV licence going up in 2026?
Yes. The colour licence rose from £169.50 to £180 on 1 April 2026, a 6.2% increase based on CPI inflation. The B&W licence rose from £57 to £60.50. The fee is now set to rise with CPI each year until the current charter ends in December 2027.
What about caravans or holiday homes?
If your main home is licensed and you use a battery-powered device (not plugged into the mains), your caravan or holiday home is covered. If you plug a TV into the mains at a second property, you need a separate licence for that address.
Do over 75s get a free TV licence?
Only if you or your partner receive Pension Credit. Since August 2020, the universal free licence for over-75s was ended. You must apply through TV Licensing and provide proof of Pension Credit. If you do not receive Pension Credit, you pay the standard £180/year.
